Making your daughter a Survival Kit

Standard

This is something I plan to do for my daughter and wish my mom would of done for me. I would recommend giving this kit and talking her through it around the 4th or 5th grade. Click  for my horrible coming of age story.

I will be doing a two part blog post about this. The post you are reading now will help you make your daughter’s emergency bag, in part 2, I will help you make the full box that the bag goes into along with talking points and better ways to explain to your child what is going on.

Please have a talk with your child and to make growing up easier for you and her both, make her a Survival Kit, this will open doors to communication for years on out. You can put whatever you want into yours but I will also add what I would of loved to had and I will also include some print out talking point/question sheet to add to the bag to make for easier discussion.

For easier shopping, I’ve added pictures for you to click on, once you’re on the site all you have to do is add the items to your cart, continue shopping and then check out. You can either get the items delivered to your home or they can ship to store. I highly recommend getting all the items for the kit like this to save money, save time and not to forget anything!

– 1. Tampons, 2 to throw in her sanitary bag ( I recommend Kotex U because they are smaller and in cuter packaging)

– 2. Panty Liners, 2 to throw in her sanitary bag (Recommend Kotex U for the same reasons, the packaging is so colorful!)

– 3. Pad, 1 to throw in her sanitary bag ( would recommend getting the ones with wings just because they stay in place better.)

– 4. A cute tampon bag a.k.a. sanitary bag (These are like tiny makeup bags, tell her to take the tampons/panty liners outof the survival kit and place them in the little pouch and throw them in her purse so they don’t fall all over the place or get damaged. Even if she hasn’t started her period yet, she should carry it with her, just in case. This will make sure she doesn’t get embarrassed by a tampon falling out in public and it keeps them all in one place and easy to find.)

– 5. Throw in a few Midol or other PMS pills in there for her to stick in her sanitary product bag

– 6. A new pair of panties (Just in case it comes unexpected. I would recommend a pair of white cotton bikini cut panties. Not only does the cotton let you breathe more so there won’t be as much of a smell but wearing white panties decreases the chances of an UTI.)

– 7. Feminine Hygiene Wipes, 2 to throw in her sanitary bag (Another just in case her period come unexpected at school and she wants to clean up, these are also great just to freshen up.)

– 8. A cute cosmetic bag This is something she can throw all her emergency supplies in. This is plenty spacious and it’s perfect to leave in her locker at school.

I know these talks are uncomfortable but you don’t want your child growing up ashamed of their bodies, self-harm or finding the wrong answers from other people. Please have a talk with your child and to make it easier for you and her both, make her a Survival Kit. You can put whatever you want into yours but I will also add what I would of loved to had and I will also include some print outs to add to the bag to make for easier discussion.

The rest of the supplies we didn’t use will go into the bathroom for later/home use. You should recommend filling the cute makeup bag with the just in case products and keep it in her locker at school.

  2. It’s so silly – I’m a doctor and talk about this all day but when I just thought of making a pack like this in the future, for my now four month old daughter I just felt queeeeeeasy.

    • I understand the queasy feeling but the more open you are about it, it will help her not be ashamed of her body and the changes she will go thru. I know that’s easier said than done though. My mom never talked about this stuff to me so when I first started growing pubic hair, I thought something was wrong with me & when I got my first period, I tried to hide it from her. lol I know it’s a long time from now but good luck. :p
